Question 9

What are we putting homeowners on the hook to maintain?

Homeowners already care for the systems that make their homes safe and functional, including smoke alarms, plumbing, electrical equipment, heating and cooling, and landscaping – to name a few. A home fire sprinkler system deserves the same attention, but it is a low-maintenance system. The Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition recommends occasional visual checks of the sprinklers and controls and a simple flow test about twice a year. Homeowners can perform the tests themselves, or work with a contractor if they prefer. The goal is to give homeowners clear instructions and a practical choice about who performs the checks, just as they do for other home systems.
