Question 40
How often does a house fire start a wildfire?
The National Interagency Fire Center tracks structure origin as its own wildfire cause category, defined as a fire that started in a structure and moved to the wildland. Separately, based on National Fire Incident Reporting System data from 2019 – 2023, in one- and two-family dwellings where sprinklers were present, activated, and were effective, fire spread was contained within the building 98% of the time, with only 2% of incidents reporting that fire spread to the outside of the building.
