Water providers do not typically approve the sprinkler system itself. They control the service connection, including whether a meter is required, its size, and the associated tap and system development fees. The American Water Works Association (AWWA) recommends that the sprinkler design be approved before service line and meter permits are issued, so the connection is sized to the system rather than the other way around.
